Half-Life 1 expansions source remakes.

    • Half-Life 1 expansions source remakes.

An in depth discussion on the three Half Life 1 expansions source remakes, Operation Black Mesa (Half-Life: Opposing Force), Guard Duty (Half-Life: Blue Shift), and Hazard Team (Half-Life: Decay)

Discuss your opinions about them, what you think should be added to them, any questions you have about them, and show your appreciation. Or anything else you wish to say about them.

I made this thread because I couldn't find another like it. :)
Black Mesa Source. Operation Black Mesa. Guard Duty. Hazard Team. HL remakes FTW.
    • They sure as hell seem to exist, I think.

It would be cool if all these remakes were synchronized with each other from the start so there could have some sort of consistency between them.

Eh, also I kind of wish those take the same relative amount of time that is taking BM to be made, so the ignorant haters would realize that remaking big commercial games with part-time mod teams is not easy nor fast.
If you can read this, then you can read, congratulations.

Well currently, Guard Duty and Operation Black Mesa are currently joined together, Guard Duty used to be partnered with Hazard Team, but they had some dev issues.

BM will definitely be released before GD and OBM, and I don't see us releasing GD or OBM anytime within the next year. There is always a possibility it may take just as long, though I for one am working hard to make sure it doesn't ;)

But ya... whiny little haters are gonna hate either way haha

Some of the models looked godawful. I'm pretty sure some of them were just the goldsrc models uprezzed and smoothed over.

I'm sure they're looking better by now. Especially with the merger of Guard Duty and Operation Black Mesa. The only one I really didn't like was this one. Well, the model is nice but I don't like the texture.

When I first joined OBM there were quite a few small models that seemed to have been rushed and therefore were lacking in quality.
But there were also plenty of very high quality ones also.

I cant say with certainty or not if some of the older models (before i joined the team) were ports of the goldsrc models with more subdivisions.... but I highly doubt it. I think its more the case of being afraid of deviating from the original design. So people may have been trying to duplicate a model exactly, instead of redesigning it like they should have been.

The quality of work overall currently is high and our expectations for ourselves is high.
Since the merge, we have gone through and found all duplicates (models that both teams had made separately of a similar object) and chosen the best 1 and scrapped the old.
I have also been going through a lot of old models and personally improving them in pretty much every way.

Good to here. And any news on the new websites for GD and OBM?
    • I actually have a question for both Tripmine Studios and Hazard Team Devs, when Black Mesa is released, would you be re-designing areas from original Half-Life that appear in the expansions to make them look more like Black Mesa? Or fill some cannon gaps, to make the overall game play feel more...connected?

We have had a few setbacks in regards to the website. The most recent has been the merge, because we have had to think about how we will now present ourselves as 1 team with 2 projects.
But basically the main designs/layouts are created, we just need to finalize a few things and actually get it hosted.

I feel like our level designers have already gravitated towards making the few key crossover areas look similar to the ones on BM. If anything, actually experiencing these areas in BM after release will probably just serve as some extra inspiration for final touchups.
I think most of us are aiming to make all the games feel as connected as possible, within the boundaries of our current relationships.
After all, its the fans (i like to think of them as non-paying customers) that we are trying to please the most, and continuity is very important to practically everyone ;)
    • I'm really impressed that all these mods are being made. Heaps of respect to all the developers. Very much appreciate the notice that OBM and GD are >1 year away.

As for GD and OBM, will all the guns and the screen layout (i.e. position, font etc for HP, armour, ammo etc) be identical? Is there a plan to produce a multiplayer free-for-all from these projects? Are there plans for many Easter eggs in these games?

As for Hazard, will there be a single-player version similar to that in the original?

Right now, I feel we have some pretty good maps in the making, I'm sure though that when Black Mesa is released it will Inspire the mappers to change things.

There has been an idea floating around with the idea of a single player version, however the player not in control would be a simple commandable bot.

Will the bot act similar to following resistance members from Half-Life 2, or like Barney or Alyx or Grigori, Or even a security guard, just with some commands on the side?

I would like to just specify this one.

There are no relations to BM levels within GD/OBM whatsoever. While we aim to make all levels consistent within OBM and GD, we are not considering doing so with Black Mesa levels though. In short, crossovers will look different in our projects and BM.
