I have downloaded all three files and placed them in the same folder. Whenever I try to use the installer it says "Failed to extract files, 7-zip returned error code: 2" I have deleted and redownloaded all of the files multiple times.

I struggled with this for a couple of hours today and eventually got it working. I have a couple of theories as to how to fix it, but you will have to be my guinea pig.

1.) Make sure you have the most up to date 7zip client.

2.) After that, delete the failed installs. They are under C:/program files (86) Steam/Steamapps/sourcemods. Just delete the whole BMS folder.

3.) Run the installer again and see if that works.

      If not...

LEAVE step 3's install ALONE and run the installer again, this time, name it something else like. "BMS2". (w/o quotes.)

That's how I got it to work. I know you said you did a lot of re downloading, but I'm of the belief this is an issue with the installer and windows working together.

      Let me know what happens.

I'm having the same issues. I rebooted and tried the steps you listed above including getting the latest 7zip and still no dice. I noticed in the buffer I see data error behind each object as it's extracting. Did you also see that as you were having the issue?
    • I manually extracted to the C:/program files (86) Steam/Steamapps/sourcemods folder using 7zip file manager and behind each file in the buffer I saw something to the tune of file is broken. I launched steam once it was done and BMS showed up, I tried to launch it and it failed. I'm downloading the installer again via torrent. The blackmesa.7z is currently stuck at 99.8%.
    • So downloaded again, from same tracker plus a few others, and got the same error. I tried it on my home file server, got the same error. I tried extracting with winrar and got a diagnostic message saying the file is corrupt on most of the files. I'm downloading from one of the mirrors via http now as opposed to using a torrent. Will follow up when that is done though it may be 24 hours or more before I can do so because of family and work and all.

      I did not.

When I was going through the process, everything but 1 item extracted as it should have. Unfortunately I didn't catch what it was.

This is what I saw at the end of my list:

      Extracting expressions/humans/guard
      Extracting expressions/humans
      Extracting expressions/eli
      Extracting expressions
      Extracting downloads
      Extracting downloadlists
      Extracting cfg
      Extracting bin

      Sub item Errors: 1

Failed to extract files. 7-Zip returned error code: 2

The more I read about this, the more I think it is the installer. I used the same download, re-installing it over 5 times until it finally just worked for some reason.

Now, doing that is time consuming and potentially a huge waste.

Wish I knew more, but the fact that this and another thread of the same topic have a combined total of 1600 views, it is definitely not a minor issue, and I'm just a normal guy sharing my experience with the problem. Would love to see a mod team member maybe look into this, however, I see that as highly unlikely as Steam will be picking this up in a short while.

      Hang in there, mate.
    • I've tried to download 6 times, on 7th now. Not expecting any success. Always an error with the 7zip file. And if my download had par's outside of the MD5, then they, too, show the 7zip to contain errors.

There has to be a better way to get this. It's getting to the point of being ridiculous. Reminds me of when Quake was released, only for some reason, we didn't have these sorts of problems despite the game being released in small packages.
    • I'm getting the same error. Over and over again. Is there really no way to fix this? I've tried everything as well. How is this on steam greenlight when you can't even download it through steam? Also, the 7zip program is garbage. I've spent so much time trying to get this to work, I just want to give up. You spend almost 10 years working on this project and you send it out into the World like this? Jesus....

Download and install 7-Zip (7-zip.org/download.html) and then be sure to extract the blackmesa zip file using Windows explorer (at least that's how I did it) That fixed the issue for me. I was getting the same error.

      Step by step:
      1- Download and install 7-Zip
2- extract blackmesa.zip with Windows explorer
      3-Double click on Blackmesa setup

I actually already tried using 7zip. I've been using the command line version of this for years to automate CNC downloads and other such non-sense but this is my first go at the GUI version.

When I extract using the 7zip GUI it it ends with 29409 Errors. Win Rar just tells me the file is corrupt. Same results from every version I've downloaded.
    • Using MD5 check v 2.1 I found that the checksum doesn't match between the blackmesa.7z and blackmesa.md5 file. I'm not a file compression guru so I'm not sure what this tells you other than we've got CRC issues.

      BlackMesa
      MD5 CDFBDD9E6C51BF4E98F4FF0BA18AB980
      7z 5F5B38F945FF7F52927A2AE664F48B15

Means that you're probably going to have to download it again. You used torrents last time?

Try using one of the direct download mirrors.
    • I'm also having the same error. I could be wrong, but I think it has something to do with the 7zip file being corrupt.

I've tried downloading from gamefront, fileshack, moddb, and Chip.de. Unfortunately, I can't download using torrent.

I either get an error 2 while using the installer, or can't unzip all the files due to file corruption.

      Any help would be appreciated.
    • Verify the MD5 of the 7zip file using a md5 hashing tool.

If it does not verify you will need to redownload.

I REALLY recommend torrent because it will do hashing verification for you as the file downloads. Failed hashes result in only the corrupted piece being redownloaded. Also the torrent will likely be faster now than HTTP downloads.
    • Same problem

I've tried a torrent and a direct download. Also checked with someone else on my steam friends list and he downloaded from the same mirror I did with out a problem. Like him I don't have 7zip installed. (I dont like the crap that goes with it) but I do have the ability to unpack 7zip files. Before some one suggests that I download zip I'm just personally at a spot where I'd rather wait for it to come out on steam than download it again or install bloatware.
    • Here is my success story with this error.

I tried extracting the BlackMesa.zip file with WinRAR and then proceeding to use the installer or 7-zip, but apparently this is the step that causes all the problems.

Here are the details of the successful method I used:

Uninstall 7-zip. Reinstall using freshly downloaded 7zip 9.20 x64 from their website (7-zip.org/download.html).
Extract BlackMesa.zip (md5#: D0C72B16AA176D7FFFF57CB019C13267, size: 3,299,286,777 bytes) using freshly installed 7-zip. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER PROGRAM FOR THIS STEP.
      Use 7-zip to extract BlackMesa.7z (md5#: F1D86575816F4C6994A5657EEBF76409, size: 3,298,098,513 bytes) to <Steam>\steamapps\sourcemods\BMS
This process should be unremarkably error free.
      Restart Steam.
      Play.

I hope this helps. It seems as though the .zip file the installer is originally compressed in is non-standard and was compressed by 7-zip. Therefore it stands to reason that 7zip is the only program compatible with the file.
