Laser mines insurmountable

First, congrats to the devs for making a very fine mod. It's perhaps the best mod in gaming history for one of the best games in gaming history.

But, I've simply reached my peak of frustration with one little part....

It's my fault really. I've always sucked at platform jumping, and this mod is putting me to the test. Not all of us are keyboard ninjas you know.

I've tried (I'm not kidding) for over two hours to get past the laser mines in "Surface Tension". I've tried the "double jump" or duck-jump to no avail. The duck-jump seemed to have worked fine for me when jumping up on platforms, even though I'm not very good at it, but it just doesn't work at all for me when trying to jump over the laser mines for some reason.

Is there another way to jump higher? I've been doing the following; with "always-run" enabled, I press W (forward) then tap ctrl (duck) then tap space (jump).

I'm so frustrated right now, I'm tempted to ask for someone else's save file.

Walk slightly, jump, then crouch, in that order. Then HOLD crouch until you actually land. No biggie.

Also, hit F6 to quicksave every time you do a successful jump.

You can alternate the game files to jump much higher. Assuming you installed Black Mesa in a normal directory structure, go to:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\SourceMods\BMS\cfg

Open Skills.cfg with Notepad.

find:
Code:
bms_normal_jump_vertical_speed "160"
bms_normal_jump_crouch_vertical_speed "160"
bms_double_jump_vertical_speed "200"
Change it to:
Code:
bms_normal_jump_vertical_speed "300"
bms_normal_jump_crouch_vertical_speed "300"
bms_double_jump_vertical_speed "300"
You should jump twice as high.

Sorry, I meant to say "ctrl" for duck, if that's what you mean, Navitas.

So, tapping jump then holding crouch lets you jump higher?

Technically, it means that your legs will be higher (not your viewpoint), making it less likely that your feet will touch the laser.

Awesome. I'll give that a go right now.

Try to think if you're headed the "right" (=easier) way before attempting any jumps. I died lots of times because I was going the harder way.

There are at least 4 or 5 different paths you can take. Some are absolutely weird, and others are pretty straightforward.

I was gonna say...careful jumping 2x as high because you might hit the lasers ABOVE you rather than below haha. Glad you made it though.

Am I the only one wondering how he got there without knowing about the crouch jumping?

He knew crouch jumping. He just did it in a different order: Crouch, then jump.

Using that way is not as effective and in my experience not enough to pass previous jump puzzles but fair enough.

Yeah, that's probably why he had trouble with crouch-jump in the first place.

And that's why taking out the tutorial was a bad idea. Sure, it saves A LOT of work for a section that really isn't part of the game, but even 14 years later, Half-Life STILL has a number of unique quirks that people just don't "get" without having them shown to them. Duck-jumping is one such aspect, long-jumping is another.

I mean seriously, can you imagine the horror when people who've never played Half-Life will experience when being tossed into Xen and the VERY FIRST thing they're required to do is long-jump from one small platform to another with no-one having explained to them how to do it? If you think people hated Xen before...

Hell, I love Xen and I hope it has just as much platforming, and I had trouble making that first jump back in 1998. And I did the tutorial, no less.

Master duckjump or quit half-life, harsh truth of it.

That's how to use the long-jump module though, isn't it? Still might come in handy in the next release.
