As far as I know Source doesn't take advantage of multiple cards well.

Nope, I just think they might not know shit about this mod's performance . Raminator said a while ago that one of the first builds run at ~5fps on his system. You think Valve would know more about that than the actual devs? :]

On crappy computers yes, because source finds it difficult to handle large, outdoor environments. You probably already know this but nvm.
I think the majority of people didn't lag though.

You didn't know it but all of the NPCs are actually run by network code from a central computer at Valve.

THAT was your question. Since it's a mod and they CAN'T add or disable such features, it handles the dual gpu's the same way episode 2 does. If it was running with 5fps on dual gpu's, it couldn't magically run faster on single gpu system (unless you've got a fucked up system). I'm pretty sure you misread something, like Ram said. If EP2 was laggy for you then BM will be even more laggy....

Our levels are 2-3 times bigger.
We have more entities in each map.
We higher end textures & models
and so on...
