  • Quote from Braingasm: “I'm not trying to offend you, but your guide sucks. It has blindingly obvious gaps, or perhaps it is no longer relevant to the version of Wineskin that is currently available, either way, this guide is nearly worthless.” Thanks for the feedback! As far as I can tell the guide is still relevant. What is outdated? What did you find confusing? Sorry, but the gaps are not evident to me, please be more specific.

  • Quote from stephenh: “thanks for the quick reply, how do i start steam, or steamwine as it is called, in offline mode? do i turn off my internet or is there a setting somewhere? many thanks, ste” I guess the easiest way is to turn off your internet.

  • Quote from stephenh: “Hey I followed your instructions and everything seems to work apart from an issue i have installing and starting up steam. Steam says it is updating but then appears to get caught in a loop of extracting, installing and then failing to remove a temporary folder - see screenshot which is attached. I think this issue is unique to me, is there a way to solve it?” Honestly I don't know what is going wrong, but I have a couple of things for you to try. 1. try to click "cancel" w…

  • Quote from colloquy: “Hi guys! I installed BMS using kerning's instructions, and it's fantastic! (thanks to everyone involved in getting the port to work!) However, it's quite unstable during large fights, and crashes randomly every once in a while (trying to run it on maximum graphics). Is there anything else that can be done to improve stability? (or another method that results in fewer crashes?)” Does lowering the graphics quality help?

  • Quote from spbw: “I tried a few different ways to get BM going on my macbook with no avail until I found this portingteam.com/files/file/7540-half-life-2-black-mesa/ Pretty painless to get going and worked like a treat on my 2009 mb” It sounds convenient - but I have the impression the "csmania.ru" standalone hack that the wrapper is using is not quite compliant with the Steam Subscriber Agreement..

Quote from Gunsrequiem: “The level you're talking about is bm_c1a1d with the lift. As soon as you try to noclip down the lift part without activating it first, or noclip too far outside the main level, it forces a reload. I took a peek around but didn't see anything, but since it has the same behavior as the taco shack level, it's completely possible there's something hidden in the dark areas outside the main construct. Maybe worth a closer look?” Not sure if it helps, but to avoid the reload wh…

Quote from Gunsrequiem: “Also, I didn't notice that pizza box the first time I visited Welsh's portfolio site--could it have been added later to steer us toward something?” Google cache page (Sept 29) is different from what we have today. The image tag changed src (from "pizza" to "drjwelsh") and class (from "WJD" to "DJW"), and title ("Dr J Welsh") was added. The base64 message is the same though. It's hard to say whether the pizza image was visible at that time.

  • Quote from joel42: “That looks like the same bug, but now, whenever I try to open SteamWine, it opens for a few seconds, then quits with no warning... I think i'll just restart the process.” This time make sure you use "WS8WineCXG10.3.0" at step 2. Let us know how it goes.

  • Quote from joel42: “When I open the new Steam window, everything seems fine except there are no words in any of the boxes. Whenever I attempt to type something, the cursor stays in the same position and no words appear. i can't seem to figure out how to navigate the window. Help?” Which engine are you using? It looks like bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31374 To work around it, try this: open again the Wineskin app inside SteamWine, click "Advanced", set "EXE flags:" to "-no-dwrite", quit.

  • In blackmesasource.com/download.html there's a broken link to an image. The link shows as HTML Source Code (1 line) It doesn't show properly - unless you're hosting a black mesa mirror on your machine, I guess EDIT: sorry, please delete. it's a dup of the (still not fixed) forums.blackmesasource.com/showthread.php?t=12644

  • Quote from happyapplesauce: “That sounds like a good idea Shepters, but how would I go about getting that dll? I don't have access to another computer where I am, much less your son's ;)” You should be able to find an old (but legal) version here: support.microsoft.com/kb/939130 I wouldn't install it. Just extract all the files and get the dll you need. The commands (I didn't try them) should be something like: Source Code (3 lines) But on second thought, since you're trying to replace a dll to …

Few things to try.. 1. Did you try a "verify local data" or "force recheck" for the torrent after download? (it should re-download corrupted chunks and fix it.) 2. Are you using the installer, 7zip or WinRAR? (you might get this kind of error if you are using old/incompatible decompressor versions. the file is might not be corrupted, just use the installer.) 3. You might want to add an ip filter/blacklist to your torrent client (to minimize torrent poisoning - then re-download from scratch.) Hop…

  • Amazing work guys! I just wanted to report a broken link.. Click on "Black Mesa" subforum. forums.blackmesasource.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1 Click "Black Mesa general FAQ". forums.blackmesasource.com/forumdisplay.php?f=31 redirects to wiki.blackmesasource.com/General_FAQ (broken) instead of wiki.blackmesasource.com/General_FAQ I'm seeing the problem on both Chrome and Safari.

  • Quote from textcursor: “Worked and the game runs! Thanks for the fast response Only issue is, its too choppy/slow to play on my computer (jan-2011-macbook-pro15") guess ill have to try bootcamp” Glad to hear that! Not so much about the choppiness BTW Windows 8 Release Preview is free to try until something like January 2013. Personally I don't feel like advocating for it, but it's worth a shot for bootcamp if you don't own Windows already.

  • Quote from textcursor: “So Ive managed to install everything, but when i try to open BM through steam it trys to validate files and then says 'steam servers are too busy try again in a few minutes' then says all files 100% validated but doesnt open the game. any thoughts?” I've seen that sometimes. To work around it: in Steam, select Library->Tools->Source SDK Base 2007, ctrl-click, Properties->Local Files->Verify Integrity of Tool Cache. When it's done validating you should be able to play BMS …

  • Quote from kerning: “It a niffy idea, but the Engine and WineTricks that we set up for Black Mesa might not works well for the different games. I am not an expert on Wine, but it is safe to check out which Engine and WineTricks work the best for certain games. You might need to create every new wrapper with Steam in each of them for different games, perhaps?” An official list of what works and what doesn't (and maybe the necessary tweaks) is maintained at appdb.winehq.org. The same engine won't …

I tried to investigate the tau cannon incident looking at the map. It looks like the gibs belong to "dr_horn". In the Laser Lab, before the overcharge, there are a scientist, a guard, and gibs floating in mid-air. Not sure of what it means, but anything "Dr. Horn" might be relevant.

Not sure if it's of any help, I've added a list of map name / coordinates for all the references to sounds/textures/models I found in the .bsp maps. I saved it here: thepizzaisalie.wikia.com/wiki/Back_References For example, I can get to the set of pizza boxes by Source Code (1 line)

  • Quote from Fay_Gaggot: “I followed this step by step, and even installed the SDK. When I went to run Black Mesa, I realized that it wasn't in my games library and I can't find it anywhere. I've tried installing it several times.” Some Windows users are having this problem too.. try this: forums.blackmesasource.com/showpost.php?p=501362&postcount=2 Just make sure you're using "SteamWine.app" and not "Steam.app". Let us know how it goes.
